Why Goodwill? I fell into this organization out of college. I was looking for something to help me pay rent while I tried to figure out what to do with my degree, so I accepted a job as a cashier at the Lawrence store. It didn't take long for me to fall in love with the mission, the agency, and the store team. Goodwill has supported my growth, both as a leader and in my knowledge of our unusual business model. I want to give back and help the organization be everything I know it can be.
What did you want to be when you were growing up? I never had a clear answer to this question. I have always enjoyed languages and math, and I enjoy helping people learn and grow. As such, I went to college initially to become a math teacher and wound up with a linguistic's degree. I suppose when I was growing up I mostly just wanted to be of use.
What do you want to be now that you are grown up? I am doing what I want to be doing right now. I want to help Goodwill shine in this community like I know it can. I want to help us become an employer of choice and leader in service. I want to keep knowing that my work helps people reach their goals and do so in a sustainable way. I want to continue watching us get better and better every year at everything we do.
What does it mean to you to be employed? For me, being employed means I get to be a part of something bigger than myself. Being employed also means that I have the resources to have a home and a family. It means that I am secure in my future in a way not everyone gets to be and in a way that I have not always been. Finally, being employed gives me the freedom to explore and express who I am and to pursue my passions and goals.
Anything else we should know about you? I am an absolute geek, and proud of it.
