Goodwill of Western Missouri and Eastern Kansas is a nonprofit agency with a rich history of serving local residents since 1894 by empowering job seekers through individualized programs and services. As a member of Goodwill Industries International, we are part of the world’s largest and most successful network providing employment and training services for people with different abilities.
Today, Goodwill of Western Missouri and Eastern Kansas has 21 locations including three GoodWORKS Career Centers, 14 donation centers with retail stores, two donation express centers, and an outlet store. Through your generous gifts in many different forms, our donation and retail locations are able to fund programs that empower people with disadvantages and different abilities to earn and keep employment. We thank you!
A Message From the President
Having previously found the courage to leave an abusive relationship, a young lady with mental illness now faced another stressful situation. Her time in transitional housing was coming to an end and she had yet to find a job. The anxiety she was experiencing because of her circumstances only exacerbated the outward symptoms of her mental illness, making a successful interview increasingly unlikely. One of Goodwill’s Career Navigators began working with her. The specialist talked with her about her previous employment experience, helped her identify positions and employers that might be compatible, helped her prepare applications for different employers in the area, coached her through a number of interview scenarios and arranged transportation to interviews. Within a few weeks, this brave woman started another new chapter in her life with a full-time job.
Everyone knows Goodwill’s thrift stores. Some people know Goodwill’s mission is related to employment. Very few know that Goodwill’s mission extends well beyond our walls and the 650 employees in our organization.
At Goodwill, we empower people with disadvantages and different abilities to earn and keep employment through individualized programs and services. Goodwill is a hand-up, not a handout. We believe employment is the foundation of personal and community stability. We help people who have been marginalized work through their barriers to employment. The barriers include situational – such as homelessness, lack of transportation, returning from military service; educational – including illiteracy; and medical – mental or physical disabilities. All of these issues can make finding or retaining employment difficult. Often times those we serve face multiple challenges. Our programs focus on the job seekers, but the benefits often extend to the employers that are willing to incorporate these inspirational, outstanding, untapped workers into their organization’s workforce.
With your support, we look forward to continuing to help people start new chapters in their lives for many years to come.
President and CEO, Goodwill of Western Missouri and Eastern Kansas
