The History and Impact of MoKan Goodwill

Thanks to many dedicated individuals, agencies, and organizations, our non profit organization has been providing services for those in need in and around Greater Kansas City for 130 years.

Goodwill of Western Missouri and Eastern Kansas, has a legacy of empowering individuals in the Greater Kansas City area for 130 years. Its origins trace back to the Helping Hand Institute, founded in 1894 to provide food, shelter, and work relief for the homeless, enabling participants to achieve self-sufficiency. Meanwhile, Goodwill Industries, founded by Rev. Edgar J. Helms in Boston in 1902, focused on repairing and selling donated goods while training and employing individuals with disabilities. Goodwill Industries of Greater Kansas City began in 1925, expanding over the decades to include vocational rehabilitation and workforce development programs. In 1978, the Helping Hand Institute and Goodwill Industries of Greater Kansas City merged to create Helping Hand of Goodwill Industries, which became Goodwill of Western Missouri and Eastern Kansas in 2010 to reflect its regional impact.

Today, Goodwill remains a non profit leader dedicated to breaking down barriers to employment and fostering economic independence. From addressing challenges such as unstable housing, criminal records, and lack of education to providing job services and training through the Goodwill Artemis Institute, Goodwill supports thousands of individuals annually. Its mission is rooted in meeting people where they are, offering comprehensive resources to help them forge a path toward stability and success. This impactful work is made possible thanks to the support of countless individuals, agencies, and organizations committed to the cause.
